Turtle commands to start with
| Code | What it does |
|---|---|
t = turtle.Turtle() | Makes a turtle called t |
t.forward(100) | Moves 100 steps, drawing a line |
t.left(90) / t.right(90) | Turns 90 degrees |
t.color("red") | Changes the pen color |
t.pensize(4) | Makes the line thicker |
t.penup() / t.pendown() | Stops and starts drawing |
t.goto(0, 50) | Moves to a point. (0, 0) is the middle |
t.circle(50) | Draws a circle with radius 50 |
t.speed(0) | Draws as fast as possible |
Try this
- Change
range(4)andleft(90)torange(6)andleft(60)to draw a hexagon. - Load "Turtle: color spiral" from the Example menu, then change 59 to 91.
The drawing area is 400 by 400 on a computer and shrinks to fit a phone. Press Stop to end a drawing early.
What runs your code
The editor runs Skulpt, an open-source Python interpreter that works inside the browser, set to Python 3 rules. It covers what most classes use: print, input, loops, functions, lists, dictionaries, classes, and the turtle, random, math and time modules. It does not run packages you would install with pip, like numpy or pandas, and it can't open files on your computer.
FAQ
Can I run Python turtle online without installing anything?
Yes. This page runs turtle in your browser. Press Run.
Why does nothing draw?
Make sure the code starts with import turtle and creates a turtle with turtle.Turtle(). The drawing area appears above the output once a program imports turtle.
Can I make the turtle faster?
Yes. t.speed(0) draws with no animation delay.
Can students share their drawing?
Press "Share or embed" to get a link that opens the same code. Whoever opens it presses Run to see the drawing.
Pro for teachers: classes
Make a class and assign exercises with one link. Students open it, write their code and press Submit with just a name you choose for them. No student accounts and no student emails. You see every student's code and output in one list, and can run any of them.
This is an early project. Leave your email and we'll write only about the Pro version.
