Free Python Editor

A free Trinket alternative for Python and turtle

Trinket has shut down. This editor does the part many teachers relied on: run Python and turtle in the browser, share code as a link, and embed it in a page. No accounts. Not affiliated with Trinket.

Tab indents. Press Esc then Tab to leave the editor. Ctrl+Enter runs.

Press Run.

Move a lesson over in three steps

  1. Paste your lesson's code into the editor and press Run to check it.
  2. Press "Share or embed".
  3. Send students the link, or swap the old embed on your page for the new embed code. In Google Sites use Insert, then Embed, then "Embed code".

The link holds the whole program, compressed, after the # in the address. There's nothing to expire on our side, and nothing to export later.

What carries over from Trinket

If you saved your code before the shutdown, from a download, a student's copy or a lesson document, it can be pasted straight in. We have no access to Trinket's stored content.

What runs your code

The editor runs Skulpt, an open-source Python interpreter that works inside the browser, set to Python 3 rules. It covers what most classes use: print, input, loops, functions, lists, dictionaries, classes, and the turtle, random, math and time modules. It does not run packages you would install with pip, like numpy or pandas, and it can't open files on your computer.

FAQ

Is this Trinket?

No. It is a separate free editor, not affiliated with Trinket, made to replace the run, share and embed part for Python lessons.

Can I import my old trinkets?

Not from Trinket. Its announcement says trinkets and accounts are no longer accessible and its export tools are offline. If you have the code saved anywhere, paste it in and press Share.

Will my old trinket.io embed links work if I change the domain?

No. Our links store the code itself in the address, so each program needs a new link. Paste the code, press Share, and replace the old iframe.

Does turtle work the same way?

Turtle programs written for Python 3 run here: Turtle(), forward, left, right, color, pensize, speed, circle, penup and pendown, and more.

Pro for teachers: classes

Make a class and assign exercises with one link. Students open it, write their code and press Submit with just a name you choose for them. No student accounts and no student emails. You see every student's code and output in one list, and can run any of them.

This is an early project. Leave your email and we'll write only about the Pro version.
